Winter layering: jackets over kurtas
A Delhi or Lucknow December asks for warmth by nine in the evening and nothing by one in the afternoon. The answer is a layer you can take off, chosen so that the outfit looks finished both ways.
The combinations that work
- Quilted or printed jacket over a plain kurta: the classic. Keep the jacket a shade darker than the kurta. See [women's jackets](/women/jackets) and [kurtas](/women/kurtas).
- Long shrug or cape over a kurta set: adds drama to a festive set without hiding the dupatta.
- Overshirt over a dress: for the office or a daytime wedding. The [dresses page](/women/dresses) and the jackets page let you see both halves on a model with your body type.
- Nehru jacket over a kurta for men: the [men's jackets](/men/jackets) and [men's kurtas](/men/kurtas) pages show the pairing.
Lengths
A jacket that ends at the hip over a long kurta gives two clean lines. A jacket longer than the kurta looks like a coat, which is fine on purpose and awkward by accident.
Fabrics
Wool blends, quilted cotton and corduroy for daytime; velvet and silk-look jackets for evenings. Fleece belongs to the morning walk.
See the layer on you
On Jachega the jacket preview shows the outer layer on a model with your body type, or on your own photo; the AI draws what is underneath and that part is not what you are buying. Pick the jacket and the kurta on their own pages and compare the two previews on your phone. The preview shows the look, not the fit.
Style notes only: what suits whom is a matter of taste, and the fit of any garment is the brand's size chart's business, not ours. Written by Jachega, 2026-10-31.
